✎ Course Description

Welcome to #middremix! With the spread of digital technologies, remix has become the language of our everyday culture. But what does it mean to remix? Do only some people remix, or are we all engaged in remixing in various ways, maybe without even realizing it? Can everyone understand each other through remix, or are there barriers? What is the role of remix within cultures and subcultures? In this class, we focus on video remix to examine the workings of remix within popular culture past and present. Drawing on the work of theorists such as Lawrence Lessig and Eduardo Navas, and practitioners such as Lim and Jonathan McIntosh, we will consider the creative and legal ramifications of remix logics. Students will also produce video remixes throughout the semester. And don’t worry; if you’re interested in other forms of remix, you’ll have the opportunity to integrate those interests as well.
